1. Can I electronically file a state tax return without a federal tax return?

No. Our tax system cannot transmit a state return by itself unless a federal return was previously filed. If your state return was rejected but your federal return was accepted, you can resubmit your state return electronically.

Please Note: You can choose to electronically file your federal return by itself.

2. When will I receive my refund?

To check the progress of your current year's refund, call 1-800-829-4477 and use the refund status option offered on the TeleTax system. Some refunds may be delayed because of compliance reviews to ensure that returns are accurate.

If you file a complete and accurate tax return and you are due a federal refund, you should receive your refund:

  • Within several days via our expedited refund service if you qualify and file electronically.
  • Within 2 weeks after the acknowledgment date if you file electronically, and you elect to receive your refund via Direct Deposit.
  • Within 4 weeks after the acknowledgment date if you file electronically, and you receive your refund via U.S. Mail.
  • Within 6 weeks from the date the IRS receives your return, if you file via U.S. Mail.

3. I need to delete some information from my return. Why do I get an error message when I try to remove that section?

You need to delete all information on every screen you entered in that section. The easiest way to do this is to click the link "clear all entries on this page" for each page that you have information that should be removed.

4. Does your program calculate the new deduction for teachers and educators (Educators Expenses)?

Yes. Enter your expenses for books and classroom supplies when prompted by our program and it will include the appropriate amount for the deduction.

The "Teacher Tax Credit Act of 2002" allows teachers to deduct the expenses for classroom supplies they buy for their classes. For tax years 2002 and 2003, eligible educators will be able to deduct up to $250 of these expenses even if they don't itemize. Eligible educators include teachers, instructors, counselors, principals or aides in both public and private schools in grades K-12 who have worked at least 900 hours in elementary or secondary education during the school year.

6. What do I do if the IRS rejected my electronic return because last year's AGI did not match the IRS master file?

In order to participate in the IRS paperless electronic filing program, you are required to select your own PIN and to provide your adjusted gross income from your 2001 tax return. In our program, we provide a place to enter this information on the electronic filing tab. We also provide a line reference from your 2000 tax return so you can easily find this number. If the numbers you entered in our program match the numbers on your return, and it was rejected by the IRS, it appears the problem may be in their master file. At this point you can try and contact the IRS to correct their master file information or you may select NOT to participate in the paperless electronic filing. You would still be filing electronically but it requires you to sign and mail the Form 8453-OL to the IRS after they have accepted your return. This may be the easiest solution and only requires you to remove the PIN and AGI from both the taxpayer and spouse section and recalculate your return. For your convenience, the 8453-OL will be included in your printed return.

7. What are my options for paying the balance due on my taxes?

You have several options for paying your federal taxes:

Through an agreement with Official Payments, we will soon offer you the option of paying your balance due with a credit card. A small convenience fee will apply.
We offer you the ability to use the Direct Payment option to pay the federal balance due directly from your bank account (checking or savings).
There is no additional fee for this feature.

You can mail your payment to the IRS and state taxing authority. The filing instructions in your return will give you additional information.

8. I don't remember my user ID and password from last year. Can you help me?

If you wish to use the information from the return you started last year, click the "Forgot your password?" link on the log-in screen. The program will display your password hint, if you can match your mother's maiden name correctly. If you cannot remember your password and do not wish to utilize last year's information in your 2002 return, then you need only select to start a new return, entering a new user ID and password.

Note: If you cannot remember your user ID, you must start a new blank return. For security reasons, our staff cannot send user IDs via e-mail.

9. My screen resolution is 800 X 600. Why do I get a message telling me that it isn't?

Do you have a Microsoft office bar - or a SoundBlaster bar - or any one of a number of on-line storage, or cursor, or e-mail management bars that stack on top of your Windows task bar? ANY program status or tool bar that displays on your screen detracts from the possible 800 by 600 lines of resolution. If any of these are present, or if you have the Windows task bar moved vertically to either side of your monitor, then you do not have 800 by 600 lines visible. Shut down all non-system bars (in most cases they will come back when you reboot), and make certain your Windows task bar is reduced to its smallest visible size, and at the bottom of your monitor.
